Happy New Year!

Gung Hei Fat Choi!
Happy Chinese New Year - the year of the Pig is upon us!

In China, this is also known as the Year of the Boar....
According to legend, the nian, a man-eating beast from the mountains, could silently infiltrate houses to prey on humans. The people later learned that the nian was sensitive to loud noises and the color red, so they scared it away with explosions, fireworks and the liberal use of the color red. These customs led to the first New Year celebrations. Guò nián, which means to celebrate the new year, literally means the passing of the nian beast.

The Chinese Calendar moves in 60-year cycles, meaning the world will experience in the new year events similar to those that took place in 1947.

In that turbulent year, the Cold War began in earnest when then US president Truman declared his anti-communist doctrine and the Soviet Union rejected a US plan for atomic weapons control, sparking the nuclear arms race.

And a List of TOP TEN LIST FOR YEAR OF THE FIRE PIG!

Tonight I'll be putting on my brightest Red and heading down to Columbus Park for the celebratory fireworks that will usher in the fifteen days of the lunar new year... followed by a fantastic feast - as many people as possible fitting around a table crammed full of food... reminds me of Hong Kong. I do miss Hong Kong.
